Barbate, Cadiz in is a small locality on the Atlantic Coast of southern Spain that borders with the world famous windy town of Tarifa to the south, Vejer to the north, and the Atlantic ocean to the west. It has a population of 22,000 divided between the small towns of Canos de Meca, Zahara de los Atunes and Zahora, besides the obvious historic centre of Barbate. The town of Barbate on the Costa de la Luz has long been closely linked to the sea and to fishing, in particular the Almadraba method of extracting red tuna.
The locality has a rich history, having witnessed on its coastline in 1805 the Battle of Trafalgar between the Franco-Spanish fleets and the British fleets led by Admiral Nelson.
Barbate is synonymous with fishing, and has been since the Phoenician era. In the last 40 or 50 years tourism has emerged as another source of income, especially in the areas of Zahara de los Atunes and Caños de Meca, always popular resorts with Spanish holiday makers, and now also with international visitors.
Nudist beaches, golden sands, wild beaches, sand dunes along the 25 kilometres of coastline from Zahara to Zahora, majestic cliffs, beautiful countryside- Barbate has several protected natural spaces- outdoor activities, hiking in La Breña, boat trips, sports… This is not a place where you will find luxurious hotel complexes and developed tourism services, but both Caños de Meca and Zahara de los Atunes offer an alternative type of holiday, a wealth of interesting corners to explore, an unspoilt natural environment, and above all tranquility and the chance to really rest.
The municipality of Barbate is home to a wide range of hotels, hostals, rental apartments, bungalows for summer lets, villas, chalets, etc..There are many places to choose from, but the charms of this zone mean that demand is high. If you are planning a holiday in Barbate, whether it be in Zahara de los Atunes or in Caños de Meca, you are advised to book in advance!!
One of the advantages of Zahara is that it is close to a number of different places of interest. The city of Cádiz is only an hour away. The surfers' paradise that is El Palmar is half an hour away, as is Tarifa with its beaches, dunes, windsurfing and kitesurfing.
